Florence and the Machine – Lungs

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Florence and the MachineWhen it rains, it pours. The last few weeks have continued to be filled with frustrations, the biggest of which has been a problem with the service that manages my mailing list. Having tried every reasonable solution I could find on the internet plus suggestions from computer professionals, I’ve finally found a temporary fix. (I’ve since learned the problem has affected other bloggers around the world.) When I was ready to give up, I, once again, turned to music to sooth the stresses. Unfortunately, I’ve been so out of it that I completely forgot to tell you about this must-have CD, Florence and the Machine’s Lungs.

I’ve been listening to this debut release from British siren Florence Welch and her supporting band for several months and can’t get enough of it. Apparently, the rest of the music industry world is feeling the same. She’s slowly been racking up prestigious worldwide awards, including a recent BRIT award and Meteor award for “Best International Band.” Once you’ve picked up a copy of Lungs, I’m sure you’ll agree she’s worthy of these accolades and more.

Florence and the Machine

Lungs has a serious disturbing quality about it, which it part of the reason I find it so appealing. She’s simultaneously relevant, dark, open, direct and otherworldly. It sounds like the result of abandoning Welch in a forest and allowing her to release her emotional demons. I’m sure it was a cathartic experience for her but bearing witness to the scarier aspects of the artistic mind can cause one to shudder. “Bird Song” (available on the Lungs deluxe version) is one of the darkest songs I’ve heard in a long time. But like a beautiful painting, I admire the results and try not to dwell too much on the exorcistic process required to reach such artistic heights.

In the end, Lungs served another purpose. Each track is filled with so much raw expression, it caused me to want to release emotionally. Something we all need to do periodically. Let it all out! Scream like a banshee until there’s nothing left. I love her in the same way I love Tim Burton, Laurie Anderson, Bjork, Salvador Dali and Janelle Monae. They each go beyond creating work to creating experiences. It’s a special gift.

Ready to release some inner demons? This is the CD for you. So Release! Release! Release! … but stay indoors, especially if you plan on running around naked. :-)

Armenoids’s “Transformator” was the Underrated Song of the Day a few weeks ago. When I saw the video for the track, I thought I’d share it with you. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. It’s definitely an example of finding music in everything. :-)

Other LivesWhen I come across interesting music-related articles, I usually just share them with followers on Twitter and Facebook. But when I came across this article, I had to put it on the site because it’s a list that includes one of my favorite bands from 2009, Other Lives. Take a listen to the tracks below and you’ll see why they made Paste Magazine’s list of “Eight Criminally Underrated Albums From 2009.”

Take 6 – We Wish You A Merry Christmas

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Take 6Those familiar with my musical tendencies already know I’m not a big fan of Christmas music. It’s not some politically-correct bent about the commercialization of Christmas (and other holidays, for that matter). Nor is it an anti-religious thing. It’s something very simple. I was born on December 28th and have been cheated by the season all my life. (I know it’s bitter but I gotta let it out.)

If you were born in the same time period, I can spare you my rant about the unfairness of Christmas/birthday combination gifts. However, I reserve the right to revisit that subject before the end of this post by tugging at your heartstrings with my sad story of rationing my gifts (opening half on Christmas and the other half on my birthday). But for now, I won’t discuss it. Nor will I mention the lack of birthday parties because the stork couldn’t wait until after January 1st. No, I won’t mention that either. Instead, as I turn down the sympathy violins, I’ll just take a few moments to recommend some Christmas music. ;-)

Take 6

What’s different this year, you ask? Well, sit down and let Daddy tell you all about it. A few days ago, on a flight from Ottawa to Atlanta, I sat next to a retired teacher/principal who has embarked on a journey of spiritual awareness. She was on her way to a retreat in Florida. Now normally, I prefer my flights with as little interaction as possible (no flight attendant, no beverage, just sleep). However, Sylvia was loquacious, engaging and filled me with enough of the seasonal spirit that I actually heard the words she was saying, instead of the voice of Charlie Brown’s teacher.

So, because of Sylvia, this year’s Christmas recommendation is significantly less twisted than last year’s John Waters compilation; though last year’s recommendations (listen) are quite enjoyable. I’m digging into the archives to pull out an old favorite … We Wish You A Merry Christmas from Take 6. If you’re not familiar with Take 6, you’re missing out on one of the most critically-acclaimed a cappella singing groups of all time. This Alabama sextet has been wowing crowds for nearly 30 years.

Sylvia and I had discussions on a variety of topics. (I never regretted not taking my customary nap.) The recurring theme in her topics centered on discovering your life’s purpose and pursuing it in a way that added joy to your world. As Sylvia would say “Find your candle … light it with love … use it for good.”

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Alberta Cross – Broken Side of Time

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Alberta CrossI get several music recommendations daily. It takes a major chunk out of my day but I listen to everything I receive. Unfortunately, listening to so much bad music sometimes leaves me not very optimistic about the quality of non-mainstream music. Don’t get me wrong. I want everything I receive to be great but I generally prepare myself for something only the musicmakers and their mothers could love. So when this recommendation arrived, I prepared myself for more of the same.

Well, the Me Like Good Music followers from Twitter are on the ball once again. I admit I was a little guarded at first because the person who recommended Alberta Cross (sorry, I can’t remember the Twitter name) did it with such enthusiasm that I was convinced he worked in the promotions department of the band’s label. So I took his recommendation with a grain of salt; trying to keep my expectations to a reasonable level. However, by the end of the first track I was just as enthusiastic.

As if the seduction of the first track wasn’t enough, the second track “ATX” left me willing to go anywhere this New York-based British band wanted to lead me….musically, that is. Let the head-bobbing ride begin. Admittedly, I’m a little easy when it comes to rock music. Add an element of blues and I’m all yours. (A strong drink has the same effect.)

Alberta Cross

Though I normally listen to a minute or two of each track the first time I listen to a CD, I found myself listening to several tracks before realizing I hadn’t touched the “next” button. I was captivated and thoroughly entertained. Petter Stakee’s voice maintained my attention throughout. It’s a brilliant combination of falsetto, power and range without sounding forced nor strained. It also has the right amount of imperfection necessary to honestly convey any form of blues-influenced music. Though it’s not a pretty voice, it’s quite beautiful.

I love this band. And, if you’re a fan of Neil Young (and I am), you should feel right at home with Broken Side of Time. It’s an impressive debut filled with memorable and recommendable songs. The four tracks I chose are ones I believe will be among this band’s future classics. Let me know what you think. I can handle it. :-)

Etro Anime – See the Sound

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Etro AnimeNeed a little drum-n-bass in your electronica mix? Want to experience the seemingly incompatible combination of hyperspeed beats and mellow grooves? If you do (and trust me, you want this), Etro Anime is exactly what you need. I have been promising this one to my number one Twitter cheerleader @owensk and he has been waiting patiently for it. (His hunger for musical variety even surpasses mine.)

Because this New York City electronica group is comprised of both musicians and DJs, you will always get something special in both their live and recorded work. (Frequently, electronica groups are single or multiple DJs with guest vocalists, resulting in something that’s great in the studio but difficult to replicate on stage.)

And, of course, it would all be a waste of creativity without the right vocalist to guide you through their musical landscape. Cuban singer/songwriter Liset Alea does that and more; adding the perfect vocal versatility to each track. As you listen to the selected samples, notice how her playful livingroom tone on “Adonis” changes to a seductive bedroom tone on “Diablo”.

Leaves – Breathe

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

LeavesLast year I recommended one of the earlier CDs from Icelandic singer/songwriter Emiliana Torrini. At the same time I became familiar with her music, I came across the band Leaves, because they were her opening act during her tour. The discovery was perfect timing because Breathe was the perfect compliment to Coldplay’s debut CD, which I was playing continuously at the time.

Unfortunately, they’ve been compared (ad nauseum) to Coldplay, Radiohead and other British bands to such an extent that they’ve been ignored by both critics and music lovers, who have viewed them as copycats instead of a band with a similar sound. Though I believe the comparisons are legitimate, I don’t see them as copycats. Leaves definitely are talented enough to stand on their own.

Leaves

You be the judge. Listen to the tracks I selected. If you find the sound is too much like the more popular British bands, don’t completely write them off. Their follow-up CD, The Angela Test, may be more to your liking, since it is a departure from the sound on Breathe.

The Pepper Pots – Now!

Friday, November 6th, 2009

The Pepper PotsNothing beats a little soul music to brighten a down day. And when you want the good stuff, you have to go to the hotbeds, where the riches are plentiful. Motown…Philly…Memphis…Spain. Huh? Yeah, I said it. SPAIN!!! You didn’t know? Well, let The Pepper Pots spit a little sassiness your way and show you how they do it in Catalonia.

Now! is the third release from this 11-member group out of Girona (not far from Barcelona) and is another strong addition to their impressive body of work. With their previous two CDs, Swingin’ Sixties and Shake It!, The Pepper Pots explored other music from the 60s (with clear ska influences throughout all three releases). With Now!, they show the results of many years of worshipping at the Smokey Robinson Temple of Good Shhh….uhm, Stuff.

The Pepper Pots

If your purist prejudices wont allow you to accept them as real soul and ska music makers, there’s no denying the results of their efforts to pay homage to the sound. They’ve been listening long and hard to the music masters and clearly understood what they were studying. This is the good shhh….uhm, stuff.
