Performance Opportunity for an Atlanta Band

uPlayaAnother press release that may be of interest to a band on the rise has come across my desk. To quote the release: “uPlaya is looking for a band to play at FutureMedia Fest 2010, a three-day event hosted by Georgia Tech to highlight technology advancements in the state of Georgia. The band will play in the Music Mix portion of the event, which is held in downtown Atlanta on Tuesday, October 5, beginning around 6 p.m.”

Though it’s not a paying gig, the opportunity to get your music in front of a large crowd is always valuable. And this is a crowd centered around music and media, so that makes it even more advantageous. Naturally, you’d also like to do some of your own marketing efforts by inviting others to come hear you perform (booking agents, A&R, press, etc.).

The press release specifies “band” but I believe that’s all about energy. So if you’re a singer/songwriter who can deliver an upbeat show (or better yet, have some musicians to perform with you), I suggest sending a submission. Though they may determine you’re not right for them, the person seeing your submission may know of a perfect opportunity for you. To turn a phrase, you gotta be in it to get it.

It appears only one performer will be chosen so put your best foot forward. Send an email to info@uplaya.com. In that email you should (1) introduce yourself, (2) express your interest in being chosen as the performer for the Music Mix portion of FutureMedia Fest and (3) include a link to your website or a place uPlaya can hear your music or see your performance. (By the way, if you don’t have these things available, what are you waiting for? When these kinds of opportunities arise, you should already have a Youtube channel with your music videos and performance clips as well as a website that introduces you to the world.)

So, if you’re in or near the Atlanta area (or will be during early October), get cracking. And for everyone else, Retweet or Like this post so others in your circle will be aware of this opportunity.

The Music Industry Report Offers Free Video Advertising to Indie Artists

The Music Industry ReportHere’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss. The Music Industry Report (TMIR) is offering free video advertising for indie artists, bands and producers. Yes, I said FREE. This is a chance to get your music in front of thousands of music insiders.

To be considered, submit your video to info@musicindustryreport.org. Though emailing your video directly is allowed, I recommend uploading your clip to a hosting service (like Youtube) and submitting a link to TMIR. You’re likely to run into problems when trying to email a large video file. If you use a service other than Youtube, make sure it produces embed code for your video. TMIR will use that code to copy your video.

The offer is open to all music genres. The only restriction is that the video must be in the form of a professional interview. So having your mom hold a mic in front of you in your bedroom won’t work. If you don’t have anything available, have someone conduct a quick interview before or after your next performance or during a recording break. Promotional videos will also be considered but music videos are not allowed.Starting in September, TMIR will select five (5) videos to run on a rotating basis on their website. Five new videos will be chosen each month. They don’t specify how long the free advertising will last so get your clips in as quickly as possible.

Don’t miss this opportunity to promote yourself and your music. Free widespread publicity like this is a rare thing, especially free publicity where you control the content. Take advantage of it now!

Music Video: The Twilight Sad “The Wrong Car”

I know you don’t want to see another music video about teenage angst but I liked this one, so I had to share it with you. Actually, I ‘m not even sure if the lead character is a teenager, but “he” looks the part. :-) The Twilight Sad is an indie band from Scotland. They do some pretty good music. What do you think?

Natalie Walker “Urban Angel”

Natalie Walker - Urban AngelIt wouldn’t be a normal day if I didn’t spend it listening to tons of music. However, there are times when I prefer to work in silence. I’m easily distracted so even at a low volume, the right track can cause me to daydream. So I wanted to turn off the music and concentrate on my work, but since I was too lazy to go to the other side of the room and turn it off, I decided to let the music play. Shortly after I began to work, Natalie Walker’s Urban Angel began to play. I listened to the CD a lot when I originally purchased it back in 2006 but hadn’t heard it in a long time. It was like an unexpected visit from an old friend, a pleasant surprise filled with re-experiencing beautiful moments.

From her work with the group Daughter Darling followed by her solo debut Urban Angel, she has been connected to some of my favorite downtempo work outside of Bristol, England. (“Dust in the Wind” from Daughter Darling’s Sweet Shadows was a previous Underrated Song of the Day.) This romantic stroll down memory lane caused me to temporarily abandon my work and revel in musical bliss. I even overcame my laziness and went over and added Sweet Shadows to the playlist.

Natalie Walker - Urban Angel

Walker auditioned for Daughter Darling after seeing an ad on the internet. She eventually dropped out of college to work with them full-time and record Sweet Shadows, which was extremely well-received critically. She left the trio before recording a second CD and chose to pursue a solo career. Her second CD With You was produced by the same production team who produced her debut, a duo called Stuhr, who released a CD earlier this year under the name Color of Clouds. Though With You has some similarities to Urban Angel, Walker mostly went in an indie pop direction with her sophomore solo release. Since With You, she has formed a band called Mouchette. So far, the band has released two EPs of indie pop music. It’s good stuff but nothing compares to an old friend.
